Patches,  that was exactly the man that I figured could be a good candidate for the soldier/actor  you mentioned.   If I had newspapers.com I'd do a search on him.    He seems like the most likely one.    I've no doubt as strac as he was, that the soldier from the movie has a VA headstone.  

Here's rare sighting of a patch being worn, it is unfortunate that this is all I grabbed, it is a enlarged cropped photo of what seems to have been a unit group photo. The T/Sgt wears a  Ord Collar Disc we see.

AI always distorts and modifies insignia. Look at that CIB and strange little collar disk.    I too would guess 8th Army.

Thanks again robinb for the posting help.   The pin at the top of the hanging is "as found".  The tiny button at the bottom left is a 1923 dated: Indiana Corn Growers rump'n.   The  hanging arrow head & block house is a 1931 American Legion Thirteenth Annual Convention badge that was held at Detroit.  At the top right is a Martin Luther button.   This is a very busy wall hanging. Thank you the very interesting information Cobra 6 Actual. I never thought about going through dense growth with a grenade hanging off to the side.  Hearing a "ping" and a "clack" would be extremely disturbing. 

To be honest, it looks like corrosion to me or maybe a bad recast?  Very unusual to my eye
