Interesting posts. I think though, the VFW at best is named after the WW2 S Sgt’s uncle. His obituary listed in post 16 above states that his father’s name was Glenn Webster. More than likely the brother of Herbert L Webster (the fallen soldier from WW1). Since the WW2 airman was born two years after the Uncle’s death, it would make sense that his father Glenn Webster would have named his Son after his late brother Herbert L Webster. -

I’d submit that the organization that came to be called I Field Force either wore no patch or it wore the MACV patch before its own insignia was approved. This chart from the US official history monograph about command and control in Vietnam shows the unit as directly under MACV and not subordinate to USARV. -

I am real surprised that MacArthur did not request or demand that the division that was always in his heart, the 42nd Rainbow Division, after its reactivation, be sent to him. If it was, after both its acclimatizing and combat jungle training and all, and would probably very much live up to its expectation, so bet it would of got key roles in the Southwest Pacific and the Philippines -

WW2 Ike jacket listed on ShopGW. Interesting that it has a Ground Forces Training SSI in the right shoulder. -

One Pvt Gerald Vermilyea in 1939,18th Infantry we see Company not mentioned, Fort Wadsworth NY. He remained with the 18th Infantry and the Big Red One when and after Pearl Harbor occurs in December 1941. Fast forward to early 1943 in Africa. Vermilyea only a Pfc at this time, fights in the Battle of Kasserine Pass in February, but is KIA at the Battle of El Guettar in March. -

These pics and offering of his un-named DFC showed up on the FB page Mil Collectible DoND. Interesting he’s wearing the 4th AF patch into the 50s.
