I have a bunch of items from the Proteus including some photos I took of her loading ICBM's onto a sub alongside in Guam circa 1977 when Foster was the CO.

I used to volunteer at The Western Museum of Flight when they were at Hawthorn Airport. Every summer we had an airshow and 25-30 vintage prop job warbirds would fly in. In 05 we had the F-18 Super Hornet on deck. The Marines came in the week before and connected our arresting cables. The F-18 did some flybys before making an arrested landing. At the end of the airshow all the birds took off for home and the Super Hornet was last off the line. It did a short runway take off using half the runway and went nose up in AB. I was next to the runway at the point it shot straight up and that time it was the loudest bird I had heard until the F-35. That F-35 was at 2000 feet above me and it was a living breathing monster.

Sure, The Thunderbirds and the C-5m Galaxy did a jato short runway takeoff. For short time the F-35 had a F-5 with it. A few WW2 Aircraft flew by, A B-17, B-25, P-38, P-51D, P-40 were on deck.

Very nice group, like it. Any name to go with it? 

That’s an amazing way to describe it—and that photo really brings it to life! The F-35 seems like it’s outrunning its own sound, and that delayed roar feels like it hits you out of nowhere. I can only imagine how intense it must’ve been in person. You can practically feel the vibration just looking at that shot. Were there any other aircraft at the show that stood out, or was the F-35 the undisputed star?  

The F-35 was at the March Field air show last month. That was a scary monster. I'm sitting in my chair looking at the runway. I see movement above me and hear nothing. The F-35 crossed the runway then all of a sudden this monster sounding roar came out of no where. It vibrated my internal organs. It was like the sound was chasing the bird and the bird was running for its life trying not to be captured. When the F-35 would nose up and hit AB, you could see what was happening but the sound was on a delay. It was something.

I have never had a nice complete set of 101st insignia but I am happy to say I found a great group today. I don’t know what it is worth exactly but I am pretty sure I didn’t over pay too much. It has both collar brass, the duis, and wings.
