Might be worth holding the sleeve up to the light and look through the armhole, you may find ghosting left from the thread if you are lucky. 

Yes I believe you do I would check his dress uniform for a patch but I can't as my dad striped it down in the 80s when he was a kid so I don't think the patch is still around I can ask my grandfather tomorrow

I have this, what appears to be a period hand engraved PH to an 8th AF aircrew member. I put it under a USB microscope and saw this "swish" comin out from the "u" in Paul almost looks like a mistake that was filled in with the gold lacquer or finish they used to conceal the defect?   I never noticed it until I put it under a loupe, what do you folks think? Thanks in advance
