As eagle mtn stated If I may add to him From the TIOH The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 83d Engineer Construction Battalion on 15 July 1952. It was redesignated for the 83d Engineer Battalion on 7 October 1957. In the 50s the 83rd Engineer Battalion was stationed believe it or not in France, it does go to West Germany, when France leaves the Military alliance as it were with NATO, (It keeps the political relations) and all Allied personal must leave France rather immediately. -

Top left is post WWII. The marking on the back is the “Assmann” mark (don’t laugh) a German insignia maker that made lots of US metal insignia post war -
