For many years these hats were undesirable and very low cost so faking them has to be a more recent trend if they fake them at all. So I think the one you have is period or made soon after the war, why the band is upside down is anyone’s guess. -

Due to time and date differences I’ll wish everyone there in Normandy a great time for the anniversary now. I look forward to seeing your reports on your experiences. I’m dedicating my blood donation today to all those who served, fought and bled there. mikie -

The bottom ribbon bar looks to be made of aluminum which is definitely post-war. -

I believe "the unit" you are referring to is the Pacific Military Intelligence Research Section (PACMIRS). Very cool grouping and not something seen often. I work at the museum up here at old Camp Ritchie. We have a couple of items from families and vets related to PACMIRS but it is always cool to see. As you said they would dress up in full Japanese kit and run around the mountains here. -

The building the museum currently resides in was built as the (58th) Brigade Officers' Mess. Later on it was used as a library. Most of the original Guard-era buildings still survive and have been beautifully restored. Highly recommend a visit to anyone interested. Well worth the trip!
