Might be worth holding the sleeve up to the light and look through the armhole, you may find ghosting left from the thread if you are lucky. -

Yes I believe you do I would check his dress uniform for a patch but I can't as my dad striped it down in the 80s when he was a kid so I don't think the patch is still around I can ask my grandfather tomorrow -
