Gidday Barry   The best and easist way to explain is  visually.(Thanks to Steve Johnson for using the Tennessee State Guard Patch's)   The first one uses a poplin type  material. Flat and has a "dots" weave effect.   The second patch uses twill material. The twill example has a distinct DIAGONAL appearance to the weave.   In most cases, it doesn’t really matter. However, in the two examples shown, it does make a big difference.   In these examples, the poplin patch was the “issue” (original) patch, while the twill example is one made for collectors by Patch King and other dealers selling patches to new collectors right after the end of WWII.   The next set of image shows 508th PIR (1945/46 late war US made)  poplin fabric and 508th AIR (1950's US made ) twill  fabric ,note the distinct difference of both.    Now to convert to THE British equivalent, and I can only compare British Drill  fabric which is the equivalent of US Twill ie the diagonal weave both cotton based fabrics.   The first is Satin Drill #2 Cotton Fine Course, Air Despatch Group late 1944 post Arnhem.   The second Satin Drill#2 Cotton course weave Airborne Forces WWII.   Hope this helps.   cheers    Phill        

The food packet was packed in the plastic bag for the OV-1 Cold Climate kit only. It is referred to in the manuals as "The Modified Food Packet". The TM called for the ration to be placed in a paperboard box after it was put in the plastic bag. None of the few modified food packets I have seen were in boxes.        It is hard to read the bottom line on the packing list, but it doesn't look like UH-1 to me. At least the 2nd letter doesn't look like an H.   The Army was pretty specific on kits for helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. I don't think a unit would have used the same kit in both aircraft. I couldn't find any information on what aircraft the 283rd flew.

The yellowing is from the light I use. It wasn’t daytime when I took this photo. I’ll try to get a clear one updated soon.
