Justin Posted September 7, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2010 Hi, I was watching Platoon and I was just curious, what happens to all this stuff? All this webgear, helmets, uniforms, exc... is it just sitting in a ware house somewhere? Where the covers on the helmets destroyed? Set wear and griffaiti the actors put on they sure would look like original Vietnam Era pieces no? This goes for all Vietnam era movies, as this gear is original. Misanthropic_Gods Posted September 7, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 7, 2010 Hi, I was watching Platoon and I was just curious, what happens to all this stuff? Set wear and griffaiti the actors put on they sure would look like original Vietnam Era pieces no? This goes for all Vietnam era movies, as this gear is original. Sometimes they rotate back into prop houses to be used on other films, sometimes they are trashed, sometimes they are owned by the studios and are kept in their Wardrobe departments for later use, sometimes they are rented from dealers and given back to them when the filming is over, sometimes they are sold. It really all depends on who owns it and what the film company wants to do with it. Im not in the industry, these are just some of my observations. Some of the guys here HAVE worked in the prop/wardrobe departments for major films (SPR, BOB, The Pacific, etc...) and would probably be able to answer your question with a lot more certainty. hope this helps answer some of your questions
gwb123 Posted September 8, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 8, 2010 We've had a couple of threads on this, in particular the recent prop sales from the mini-series "The Pacific". With the interest in these items, they seem to cost almost if not more than the real thing. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...t=0&start=0 http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...0&start=780 http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...4&hl=london http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...mp;hl=propstore http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...mp;hl=propstore http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...mp;hl=propstore And just for contrast, one about the outrageous prices paid for used ammo cans at the Battlestar Galactica auction http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...p;hl=battlestar
BOLO Posted September 12, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 12, 2010 I heard some of the weapons & gear was borrowed / supplied by the Philippines army, so some of it probably went back to them after filming.
vintageproductions Posted September 12, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 12, 2010 The uniforms and gear were supplied by a LA prop house called History For Hire. After the filming was done they sold off a very large portion of it. We bought a few named pieces and then sold them through one of the Hollywood prop and costume auction houses. Sabrejet Posted September 12, 2010 Share #6 Posted September 12, 2010 "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" were both largely filmed at studios here in the UK. Post-production there was a glut of used costumes and props on the market here...web-gear..uniforms..helmets..boots..rubber M1s etc. etc. The vast majority of it was repro but it looked good on camera and was ideal for re-enactors.... the connection with the movies was a bonus. I have some such items myself which bear wardrobe department stamps. I also have some original WW2 items which are discreetly stamped with 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros wardrobe dept marks. Obviously, the studios bought up surplus stuff after the war but sold it on when it was no longer required. Sabrejet
