Bearmon Posted April 26, 2017 Share #2603 Posted April 26, 2017 The Capt is wearing a RANGER tab over an AIRBORNE tab over his 197th Inf Bde SSI. He has already been to RVN. Not aware of any airborne elements in the 197th. Its pretty blurry could it be an Honor Guard tab?
seanmc1114 Posted April 27, 2017 Share #2604 Posted April 27, 2017 Its pretty blurry could it be an Honor Guard tab? After doing some more research, I feel certain now that it is fact an HONOR Guard tab and not AIRBORNE. The first picture came from the LBJ Presidential Library online site. The second picture came from the website of one of the guys who was in the Honor Guard that day. Note the caption he provides on the picture. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gacmils/galen_foster_military_ft_benning.htm
seanmc1114 Posted April 27, 2017 Share #2605 Posted April 27, 2017 Brigadier General Allan G. Pixton, XXIV Corps Artillery commander, wearing a theater made SSI in 1968. Note that the colors are inverted from the official U.S. made subdued version. The men he is talking to are members of the Kentucky National Guard's 2nd Battalion 138th Artillery. Are those tanker helmets the two men on the left are wearing?

Army Reserve Commands have been gone for quite awhile. The 98th is now the 98th Training Division. The ARCOMS were allowed to wear the SSI of inactivated divisions, but did not inherit the lineage and honors of those divisions.

Indeed they are, this unit was a Self Propelled 155mm Howitzer Battalion, and as mentioned by atb, would of been worn by select members of the crew, I gather the driver and the vehicle commander. The M109 155mm SP Howitzer.

I saw that in the original caption to the photo and typed in the wrong designation anyway. By the way, it sure is hard to locate a clear image of the 98th Infantry Division SSI being worn during World War II.

patches Posted April 28, 2017 Share #2616 Posted April 28, 2017 looks like there is no barrel on that TD SSI. Didn't notice that, maybe an error patch? Or maybe when it was colorized the barrel was not give the Black, perhaps because it was so tiny as to missed as a part of the design of the patch? If I remember Sean, there's a foto in Stanton's Uniforms of WWII of a high ranking officer of the 98th Inf Div, he's got I think the M41 or HBT overalls on with Steel Pot, maybe it was taken stateside before the division left the ZI for Hawaii, I seem to think he has the patch on, can't remember other than caption stated 98th Infantry Division if you got that book still maybe you check it out. patches Posted May 1, 2017 Share #2618 Posted May 1, 2017 1st Army with Caption, from the July-August 1968 issue of The Army Reserve Magazine. I gather this unit, the 513th Maintenance Battalion, like a lot of units back then, both RA and AR, wore no shoulder patch for whatever reason, seems they had to when they were called to active duty and sent to Meade, 1st Army took areas of command and responsibility over from 2nd Army when 2nd Army was inactivated in 1966. Strange thing is Massachusetts where this unit was from also fell under 1st Army, one would think they would of worn 1st Army too! This unit by the way, the 513th Maintenance Battalion was sent to Vietnam in October 1968, was at Phu Bai, I guess under either USARV, or 1st Log Cmd, or maybe under the 24th Corps. It was one of quite a few AR Support Battalions and Separate Companies nation wide activated and sent to the RVN in 1968. When they came home and and were relived from active duty, unit may have come under the newly activated 94th ARCOM in Boston, and may then wore that patch, the Pilgrim one. seanmc1114 Posted May 1, 2017 Share #2619 Posted May 1, 2017 Two shots showing the different incarnations of the 91st Division SSI. First is a WWII soldier of the 91st Infantry Division. Next is a Cold War Reservist of the 91st Training Division. Last is the current approved SSI of the 91st Training Division. Current version of the 91st Training Division SSI being worn. This is the third version of the SSI approved for this unit over the years.

Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore and Sergeant Major Basil Plumley wearing the 2nd Infantry Division SSI with 11th Air Assault Division SSI worn as a pocket patch at Fort Benning prior to the unit being reflagged as the 1st Cavalry Division and deployed to Vietnam.
