hink441 Posted January 5 #1 Posted January 5 I have this compass repeater and it seems a little bit different from all the others I have seen. My repeater has no markings anywhere and has a very low serial number (C- 234 - 18) Sperry patented these in 1919 and they were made for many customers. Before and during WW2 Sperry continued to produce these compasses. The high demand during the war required the need for additional manufacturers. The Dodge company built many of these during WW2. There were over 50,000 made. My question is; is the repeater a pre-patent item from Sperry? I believe it could be. Any thoughts??
hink441 Posted January 5 Author #2 Posted January 5 Here is my serial number. Hard to see but it is C- 234 18
hink441 Posted January 5 Author #3 Posted January 5 Here are some typical markings that my repeater is missing. Also some typical serial numbers commonly seen.
hink441 Posted January 20 Author #4 Posted January 20 Placed the gyro repeater on a more permanent stand and sits next to one of my steering stations that was removed from an Army Corps of Engineers dredge in the early 1970s.
River Rat 1 Posted January 21 #5 Posted January 21 That stand a great improvement. Remember our main gyro repeater was in the electricians shop on ship and it would send the signal to one like yours on the bridge if I remember right. I guess due to the electricians would do the maintenance on it was large and mounted to the deck.
hink441 Posted January 22 Author #6 Posted January 22 Thank you for your comments. Yes the main gyro compass was typically in the deep interior of the ship with the repeaters on the bridge wings and helms steering stations. I wish I could find out more about this serial number and who made this unit. Chris
