This text is from Dave Schwind, from when i purchased this grouping from him;

This letter accompanies the Distinguished Service Medal and associated documents to General Robert E. Cushman Jr.

I purchased this group from I purchased this medal from Frank Smith, who offered it on consignment from fellow collector Mike O’Shea. Frank Smith can be reached at (425) XXX-XXXX or via e-mail at fesmith68@. I do not have contact information for Mike O’Shea. I do not know how Mike O’Shea came to acquire the document and medal.

However, I do know from my discussions with historian Tim Frank that General Cushman’s loose medals and accompanying award documents were sold through an estate sale following the death of his widow. According to Tim Frank, the General’s full-sized medals are in the possession of his grandson; the remainder of his medals and badges and documents for all are in multiple collections. This medal is official government contract and was awarded to him during his retirement presentation ceremony. It includes its original official government contract titled box.

The documents include the official Marine Corps folders and award certificates for all four of his Distinguished Service Medals. These include the Distinguished Service Medals awarded for service during the following periods: April – December 1967, (1st award), January 1968 – 26 March 1969 (2nd award), January 1972 – January 1973 (3rd award), February 1973 – June 1975 (4th award). In addition to the documents, there is a folder from MAC-Vietnam, containing what appears to be the award ceremony script for his second DSM presentation.

Finally, there is an 8x10 color photo of him as well as a letter dated August 5, 1969 that accompanied his citation and certificate for his 2nd DSM and two RVN awards (not included in the group).

I bought this book from P. S. Thomas Vintage Books in Arlington, VA in Jan 2005. I was pleasantly surprised when the seller included the note about the provenance of it.
