HOF Posted December 17, 2023 Share #1 Posted December 17, 2023 Forgive me, as I am new to collecting Wings. Been mostly a patch guy all my life. (Top is 2" wing and Bottom is 3" wing) Did Balfour make pointy wings in Pilot, Aerial Gunner, Air Crew, or Bombardier?
5thwingmarty Posted December 17, 2023 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2023 Yes this is a Balfour pattern. Some date to the 1940s and some were restruck later using the same dies. This one looks like a 1940's strike based on the fittings and appearance for the LGB and sterling marks.
rathbonemuseum.com Posted December 17, 2023 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2023 The only other rating i have seen in that LGB pattern other than the observer is the flight surgeon, which has the observer as a base.
5thwingmarty Posted December 17, 2023 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2023 I have also seen Technical Observers in this pattern, but none that were not restrikes. I also know someone who has a Bombardier wing in this pattern that appears to be 1940s vintage.
