Every year on this day I think back on how my dad, a WW2 vet, remembered when his National Guard unit was activated for 12 months. He joined the 245th Coast Artillery, NYNG in 1939. He was in it for the duration, eventually ending up in Germany. He was discharged in December 1945. God Bless the Greatest Generation.

That's a great memory dan. My father also was a member of the G.G. He enlisted in the Idaho Nat'l Guard. Troop 'I' 116th Cavalry, Lewiston. Activated Sept. 1940 and his unit was re-assigned as artillery.  Battery 'E' 148th FA 41st ID. Sent overseas in April 1942 where he and his fellow gunners fought in the SW Pacific theater. Discharged in Dec. 1945 at Ft. Lawton Seattle, he spent 3 years 7 months oversea. The photo is of him at Ft. Lewis in early 1941.

On back... My truck and I (Ft.Lewis, 1940).jpg
