teufelhund Posted December 18, 2019 #27 Posted December 18, 2019 Thank you very much for your research. I do not remember how I got this mess kit, but it is keeped for a long time in my collection. Interesting to learn that the soldier became a religious man… probably the consequence of his war expériences. Thanks again Francis Belgium ( 250km from the lost battalion site)
hink441 Posted December 18, 2019 #28 Posted December 18, 2019 BTW Cy D of the 306th MGB was not involved in the Lost battalion episode as only A, B & C Cies were in the Charleveau Pocket. You have a great looking mess kit also!! I don't know where you obtained this info but I have a list of all men who were part of the lost battalion. This list is part of the 308th Infantry Regiment history book. This book lists 40 men assigned to Co. D 306th MG batt that were part of the lost battalion. Here are some pics of the book.
hink441 Posted December 18, 2019 #29 Posted December 18, 2019 Here is a page from the book listing 7 machine guns from the 306th D Co. As part of the Lost Batt.
hink441 Posted December 18, 2019 #30 Posted December 18, 2019 Here is a page that lists the names of soldiers who were assigned to the 306th Co. D MGB that were part of the Lost Batt. Unfortunately your soldier and mine are not listed.
hink441 Posted December 18, 2019 #31 Posted December 18, 2019 The soldier that owned my mess kit was identified as Harry Theodore Kaeres Pvt. From Brooklyn NY. Thank you Matt for the ID. Chris
teufelhund Posted December 18, 2019 #32 Posted December 18, 2019 You are right... my mistake , sorry One have to turn seven times one's tongue in one's mouth before asserting something... Members of C & D Cy of the 306th MGB were Indeed involved in the LB episode. FINDING the Lost Battalion Robert J Laplander and other books
hink441 Posted December 18, 2019 #33 Posted December 18, 2019 No apologies necessary !! I think it is really interesting that we have two mess kits for two guys in the Great War that probably ate a few meals together. My mess kit was found in Suffolk Virginia. Chris
aznation Posted December 19, 2019 #34 Posted December 19, 2019 Thank you Matt for the ID. Chris You're welcome Chris. Yes, they may've shared a meal together which is pretty neat. Indeed his war experiences may've very well lead to him becoming a religious leader.
