tigerfan Posted May 7, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 7, 2015 Acquired this small lot not long ago to a USN TBM crew member of VT-15 USS Essex KIA Sept. 12, 1944. Lot consists of his logbook with several entries, previous stations, etc., blue jacket manual, photo of him (far right) with the pilot and other crew member (both also KIA), stencil and a few misc. items. One of his logbook entries says they made a water landing so I assume they were once shot down. Since what I have was saved, I'm sure his purple heart and air medal are out there somewhere. pararaftanr2 Posted May 8, 2015 Share #12 Posted May 8, 2015 tigerfan, Congratulations on a very interesting grouping. In case you don't already have it, there is some information on fold3.com in a USS Essex after action report that tells how the crew met their fate. In the photo you have, the radioman, Bernard Schwartz, appears to have a pair of miniature boxing gloves attached to his life vest. These were a novelty item sold as a souvenir or good luck charm at the time. Interestingly, he also wears his pistol belt over his life vest and his goggles upside-down. Regards, Paul
tigerfan Posted May 8, 2015 Author Share #13 Posted May 8, 2015 Very Cool. I never noticed the upside down goggles or the boxing gloves. Thanks ! Here is what is written on the back of the photo: "The Famous 3 Mustacheers" Bernard Schwartz ARM2/C. The photo must have originally belonged to the other crewmember.
