I was curious what you all think of this one.  There are two different types of thread involved - light green on the Army tape and Americal patch, and dark green on the name tape, Med command patch and CMB.  That to me seems suspicious.

Also - there's a very vague shadow where the rank was, and it's about 1 1/2" by 1 3/4".  I don't have any rank patches that large on the other BDU's that I have;  they're all trimmed.

I think the BDU in post #202 is fine.

If I was a fake artist and I as going to go to through the trouble  of dummying up a uniform, I would find a more exciting combination of patches.   Why waste your time on a Medical Service Corps uniform when you could be cranking out an Airborne Ranger / MP / Tank Killer?

The large shadow for rank could be for a full Colonel if I had to guess.

Just kind of odd that there's different stitching on a couple things...

Is there a database where I can narrow down the ID on a possible Colonel Harris?

Here is a thread on OEF/OIF about fake BDU/DCU’s

https://oefoif.forumotion.net/t6932-treesuit-taskforce-hunter-gulfwar83

it could be that the US Army has been added, although I suppose you’d add the rank as well if you were faking it.

There can’t be too many medical officers with that combination of units. Vietnam vet with the 23rd ID I’d just use search terms on Google around the name, BOS and units. Something drops about 40% of the time.

Americal is different thread as well.  💩

Non-militaria seller stated in the listing that he didn't know if it was put together or not.  When I asked if he had any info about the coat, he related that he didn't know if it was put together or not.  Don't know why he keeps volunteering that...

An ordinary yard-sale type of seller.  Said he was selling things that a deceased relative had accumulated.

EDIT:  OK - this came up in his seller feedback...Evidently he had another nicer one that he had sold and didn't mention for some reason.  Anyway, the veteran evidently was indeed a colonel....

Do any of you gents ever 'restore' a coat with pin-on rank (that you know to be missing)?  I'm thinking of doing it, but am conflicted on the issue.

I don't see any harm in that.  If you decide to sell it one day, I would disclose that the pins aren't original to the jacket to the seller.

Picked up a couple dcu's and bdu's recently, but this one is my favorite so far. Really love the 1st ID and 3rd ID patch combo, it shows alot character aswell.

Right as rain.  Typical color fade from use in the field and also depending on how it was washed.

Thunderbird collector

Here's another, dated 1999 and has some repairs on it. Really love collecting 3rd infantry divison bdu's and dcu's, especially when they have a cib.

In looking at a BDU coat that I have, I noticed that the Pathfinder badge has a sort of golden-brown thread for the flame, as opposed to the other ones I have which instead use light green thread.  Does anyone else have an example like this?

I like the BDU uniform a lot, especially combat patched ones. This is one of the top ten BDU uniforms in my collection, and it’s more than just the physical uniform why it is.

Otto Lerdtadsin was born in Thailand, eventually settling in the United States where he joined the Army, serving as a Petroleum Specialist going from lower enlisted until his retirement as a Platoon Sergeant in Korea, in 2014.  Tragically SFC Lerdtadsin passed away in 2015 of unknown causes.  For his obituary the family choose a photo of him in uniform. If you notice the camo patterns you will see that it’s the same uniform as the one in my collection.

After locating his obituary I was in a quandary, 7th ID combat patch but no mention of service there.  I found a LinkedIn page for him that had him in the army from 1994-2014 which matched with his retirement timeline but still left out Panama service.  Further research lead to a small deployment to Iraq c. 2003/4 of the 7th ID, so boom he had to have been on that deployment I figured.  While crushed it wasn’t an example of a Panama vet I found solace in thinking he was a member of that small Iraq deployment.

Here’s where the story gets interesting.  I posted this uniform on another site, Others on this site chimed in to corroborate the 7th ID deployment to Iraq, but more importantly another collector posted his DCU uniforms and other items, none of them were for the 7th ID aside from a combat patch.  Almost instantaneously another member of the site jumped into the discussion, and get this, because he was Otto Lerdtadsin’s roommate in the barracks at Ft. Campbell in the early 1990s just after Desert Storm.  This person confirmed he was a Panama and Desert Storm vet. Talk about a wild ride, and great teamwork between collectors and veterans to help tell this guys story, and that’s why it’s such a neat piece to me.

This BDU coat actually belonged to a WWII vet who later served in Korea with the 45th Division!  It originally had pin-on ranks (MSG).

With BDUs coming out in 1981 this guy would have had 40+ years of service!

I do not normally collect BDUs, but this one was part of a set of uniforms I picked up at an antique mall a few years ago. The uniforms are from an Army Medical Service Corps Colonel. The BDUs have the name Garrett over the pocket and the Class A uniform has a name plate that also says Garrett. There are First Army patches in the left shoulders. Based on the ribbons on the Blues and the Class A uniforms he served in the reserves in the 1980s. Unfortunately that is all I have been able to find out about him.
