11-Bull Posted February 17, 2013 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2013 Picked up this shadow box at a yard sale. Lady running it had no info except it was her late fathers and she doubted that it was family related. The chevrons do not glow under blacklight, for what that is worth. They are 11 inches wide. What time period do they fall under? Are they original? Info appreciated. These are outside of my usual interest. I have more detailed pics if needed. Thank you. KurtA Posted February 17, 2013 Share #6 Posted February 17, 2013 Chevrons appear original. This type came out in 1872. The black chevrons were for an infantry overcoat. Normally, infantry was light blue, but in order to be more visible against the light blue color of an overcoat (some of what can be seen in your frame), black chevrons were used by the infantry branch. Lee Ragan Posted February 17, 2013 Share #7 Posted February 17, 2013 Chevrons appear original. This type came out in 1872. The black chevrons were for an infantry overcoat. Normally, infantry was light blue, but in order to be more visible against the light blue color of an overcoat (some of what can be seen in your frame), black chevrons were used by the infantry branch. Overcoat chevrons were dark blue, not black. Black chevrons were later used by the signal corps. By the way, these overcaot chevrons were worn on the lower sleeve so they wouldn't be covered by the cape of the coat.
