MAA Posted May 7, 2012 #1 Posted May 7, 2012 Well Gents ~ I've seen more than I can stand, and I can't stands no more!!! This is a MAJOR buyer beware dealer in my opinion ~ I have been watching LOTS of questionable aviation items running thru his auctions for some time, and much of it going for very large dollars. Questionable squadron patches, shoulder patches, Blood Chits, Wings (WWI and WWII) and badges. I will only comment on the aviation items as that is my specialty, but he is also selling lots of German badges and insignia as well as law enforcement badges ~ you be the judge as to the items. Does anybody else have concerns with this dealer's stuff ??? I can't be the only one seeing this.............? Here are some of his recent sales items that I would have some serious concerns with (and this is just a few select examples) ~ Ebay #350541285937 WASP Wing ~ sold for $317.89 Ebay #350547900438 Luxenberg Jump Wing ~ sold for $363.58

MAA Posted May 7, 2012 Author #7 Posted May 7, 2012 And a currently running auction......... Ebay #350563338763 CNAC Pilot Wing - metal
Sabrejet Posted May 7, 2012 #8 Posted May 7, 2012 Is this the same seller who has several "rare" Aussie-made Angus & Coote wings for sale at any one time?
Jack's Son Posted May 7, 2012 #9 Posted May 7, 2012 Pretty heavy patina on the WASP Wings. Very even, very dark, very unnatural, IMO.
MAA Posted May 7, 2012 Author #10 Posted May 7, 2012 Another questionable item ...... Ebay #350557930273 Chinese Pilot wing ~ Sold for $696.00 !!!!!!!
MAA Posted May 7, 2012 Author #11 Posted May 7, 2012 Is this the same seller who has several "rare" Aussie-made Angus & Coote wings for sale at any one time? Here is one of his recent Angus & Coote wing sales ~ Ebay #350547954868 "Angus & Coote" Senior Pilot Wing ~ Sold for $66.57 Again, people can make their own judgements ~ but, I wouldn't be adding it to my collection!
usaf70 Posted May 8, 2012 #12 Posted May 8, 2012 For those who are not as experienced it would be nice to have some sort of explanation as to what problems arer seen with the items being noted.
jpstout Posted May 8, 2012 #13 Posted May 8, 2012 I always cringe when I see a WWII USMC aviation squadron and other patches come up for sale by this Ebay dealer. Right now he has a "VMFN-544 theater made" patch for sale. It is an obvious fake. For most of these USMC patches, including this squadron, we know the extent of the designs put forth and how they were made. Theater made is a great term, but useless unless substantiated by provenance or in some cases without any provenance, the material and construction of the patch may be all we need. The devil is in the details and this patch has none. The patch for sale (left) and an original (right)...details are left out of the FAKE, not too mention the losse embroidering and wrong colors. http://www.ebay.com/itm/USMC-World-War-II-...=item519f343860
jpstout Posted May 8, 2012 #14 Posted May 8, 2012 Reverse. Same problems, poor construction, details left out, and no backing...
pconrad02 Posted May 8, 2012 #15 Posted May 8, 2012 For those who are not as experienced it would be nice to have some sort of explanation as to what problems are seenwith the items being noted. Good point, the Luxenberg Jump Wing was discussed in a different thread, but in most likely originally came from here: http://www.1903.com/Paratroopers/Luxenberg...ling-p1145.html all you want at $70.00 a pop. The WASP http://www.1903.com/World-War-II/WASP-Woma...MITED-p528.html again all you want - $90.00 The bullion stuff looks like typical "Paki" repros, stuff looking with the heavy black backing. The shine on the CNAC wings is mirror bright and the pin is wrong. just for starters Pail
Manchu Warrior Posted May 8, 2012 #16 Posted May 8, 2012 This is just an observation but he has recently sold twenty three vintage police fire or sheriffs badges. With that said, I am no expert but I find it strange that not one of them had a hallmark. Now don't get me wrong because I am certainly not an expert but I do have a small collection of badges, in the twenty to twenty five range, and out of the pile there may be one or two that are not hallmarked. So, it looks as if everything he sells may be questionable.
88thcollector Posted May 8, 2012 #17 Posted May 8, 2012 he also has various zeppelin badges. if anyone has the energy, he can be reported for the police badges and SS skull.
manayunkman Posted May 9, 2012 #18 Posted May 9, 2012 he also has various zeppelin badges. if anyone has the energy, he can be reported for the police badges and SS skull. He is also selling a Nazi RLB badge that is clearly sporting a swastika. I can't report him but you can.
MAA Posted May 14, 2012 Author #19 Posted May 14, 2012 And a currently running auction......... Ebay #350563338763 CNAC Pilot Wing - metal This just closed for $391.00 !! What a piece of crap! Who in the world is buying this stuff?
USMCRECON Posted May 14, 2012 #20 Posted May 14, 2012 Well Gents ~ I've seen more than I can stand, and I can't stands no more!!! Both have since turned out to be fakes....decent fakes but still fakes. I haven't bought anything from him since.
USAmedalfreak Posted May 14, 2012 #21 Posted May 14, 2012 This guy was also selling garbage nazi items at Gunbrokers.com. KW
Too Much WW1 Militaria Posted May 15, 2012 #22 Posted May 15, 2012 All his US WW1 stuff that I've seen so far has been junk. Better quality junk, but, junk nontheless. I'd avoid him. John
Harlan Posted May 15, 2012 #23 Posted May 15, 2012 Thanks for the info, Ian! I agree with usaf70 - when someone posts a thread about fake anything - patches, etc, it would be nice to keep in mind there are many forumers who don't know anything about that field. At least half the reason I read the helmet forum is I'm very interested in American helmets, and I learn something almost everyday from the base of true collectors here.
Cascabel Posted May 16, 2012 #24 Posted May 16, 2012 I agree. It's no help at all to point something out as a fake without explaining EXACTLY why you decided that.
MAA Posted May 16, 2012 Author #25 Posted May 16, 2012 I agree. It's no help at all to point something out as a fake without explaining EXACTLY why you decided that. I disagree ~ it (is) a help to point out something thats fake ~ it benefits everyone to at least red flag whats out there and who is selling it. If you want more information on a particular piece, I am happy to offer my knowledge at most anytime (PM me). There are also plenty of threads here on the forum that address specific topics on insignia, wings, badges, medals, etc. when it comes to authentication. Educating collectors in (the most effective ways possible) is the key to success in my opinion, but open dialog on a public forum is only part of that. Agree or disagree, public information is helpful to both passionate collectors and passionate fakers. Its not about (not) sharing information, its about how you do it ~ fakers are just as eager to get ipnut on authentication as collectors ~ it comes down to who are you helping more? I find that having a network of trusted peers is one of the best ways of sharing information and knowledge, and some of that dialog generally takes place in a more private setting.
