I took some pictures of this helmet to offer it for sale and found out that we apparently have nothing about these in the regular forum, so here we go:

This is the Advanced Combat Vehicle Crewman helmet and it was made for the US Marine Corps in the late 90's:

U.S. ARMY SOLDIER SYSTEMS COMMAND, ACQUISITION DIRECTORATE, ATTN AMSSC-AD, NATICK MA 01760-5011

84 -- U.S. MARINE CORPS ADVANCED COMBAT VEHICLE CREWMAN HELMET SOL W13G07-CBD7-0006 POC Contract Specialist FRANK A. SCIPIONE (508) 233-4366 (Site Code DAAK60) The United States Marine Corps and the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Command, Natick Acquisition Center is preparing to release in Fiscal Year 1997 a Request for Proposals (RFP) for 11,312 AVC Helmet Systems including operator manuals and 227 ACVC spare parts kits is planned. The system shall have improved enhancements and features over the current family of standard DH-132, DH-132A, and DH-132B Combat Vehicle Crewman Helmets to include: improved hearing protection and communication, improvements to the suspension system and ballistic shell, improved modular design for inter-operability and compatibility with all CVC CE, and improved sizing, fit, and comfort. The USMC ACVC helmet will be procured over two years and will be built to the performance requirements of the ACVC Purchase Description PD-A3261199.

These came in two sizes and had a noise reduction system.

Here's a couple of images from the TM for this:

  • 2 years later...

I haven't noticed many of these available, and was looking at information provided for them.

Here are some drawings from the maintenance manual. You can see the tension strap in the back, and the spot for the faceguard in the front. I wouldn't mind having one.

This was an interesting combined Army-USMC project to produce an upgrade to the DH-132 series combat vehicle helmets. The Army backed out after intial field testing indicated a variety of problems. The USMC continued on and eventually issued the helmet only to have to go back the next year and spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on repair kits to make the communications systems work correctly. The face guard was universally despised and I have never seen photo of a Marine tanker wearing the face guard in the field. These helmets were worn into the first Gulf War but even then Marines were ditching them for the earlier DH-132A's. The Marines eventually changed the name to AAV-CVCH and then slowly started replacing them with the DH-132B which they call the ECVCH. This example in my collection shows the helmet with face guard applied. I asked a Marine tanker one time why they hated the face guard so much and his reply was that you couldn't eat or smoke without taking the helmet off and that was a big pain when in a tank.

Awesome helmet Larry, I have never seen one with the face guard. Actually, until this post, I wasn't aware that there ever "was" a face guard offered for it. Just when I think I knew it all...

Dang, Larry, you have a great collection of this stuff!

I know you'll probably know this, so...

Is the USMC ECVCH the same as the DH-132B (Enhanced) with the Bose upgrade and boom mic? If not, what are the differences between the two?

And while I'm at it, did the Dh-132, -132A, and 132B all have the same liner and MK-1697/G communications kit before the Bose kit replaced it?

Carter, yes to all your questions. Larry
