it's actually been 3 years and i had to look up his first name because i only called him custer

custer was one unique bastard, in a good way. was tough as nails and if he called you a friend it was after an exhaustive vetting process.

he frequented my wife's mother's bar and in time, i'm fairly certain he came to like me. enough so, anyway, that he brought his vietnam picture album to show me one day. the picture i remember most was somebody that had taken a "thumper" round directly to the noggin.

the man loved the 1911 and the m14. had no love for the m16, like so many vietnam veterans (though i did try to convince him otherwise)

i never did get to transfer an m1a to him, guess he just never got around to it. always said he wanted one and transfered a lot of other guns through me. never paid me in cash, always brought me a bottle of gentleman jack, instead.

the world got that much more uninteresting the day he passed.

anyway, i was just thinking about him, wanted him to be remembered one more time and thought there might be the slightest chance that somebody here might have known him a world away a long time ago

RIP, custer
