irish Posted February 7, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2018 Amongst items in a group belonging to Admiral Gerry Bogan was his WW2 era wrist watch. Admiral Bogan being an early Naval Aviator and later in WW2 Commanding Carriers and Task Groups. From what I can find the Waltham FSSC 88-W-800 pieces were made specifically for Navy Pilots. Similar to the AAF type A-11 with the addition of luminous hand set and dial. This example still runs and appears to have it's original strap. irish Posted February 8, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted February 8, 2018 As a watch collector I have a particular application for this watch. Condition is excellent!!! Cherish it! Thanks, the wrist band has honest wear and with just a very light wind it ran for an hour or so. Admiral Bogan while in Command roles still flew in WW2 as recorded in his flight logs. ccyooper Posted February 9, 2018 Share #9 Posted February 9, 2018 Very interesting, he is one of the two Navy Admirals from my area. My home town is famous for its Naval aviators, Robert G. Robinson USMC, Admiral A Fitch, and even though not a main lander I sort of claim Admiral Bogan. While I knew Lt Robinson I never met Fitch or Brogan. If you have additional items please PM me. 520-73-11 Posted February 9, 2018 Share #10 Posted February 9, 2018 That's a Radium dial. It may not glow, but it's damn sure still radioactive. Does it happen to still glow? If you have access to a Geiger counter you may be surprised how "hot" that thing is. It is a method used to validate genuine watches from counterfeit ones. You can make a Rolex 5517 (British military only model- VERY rare) out of parts pretty easily, but the dial is the trickiest part. One way to validate is with a Geiger counter.
