Sabrejet Posted January 25, 2011 #2 Posted January 25, 2011 Nice clear pic Sarah. That Airman doesn't look old enough to shave yet!! Ian
Lee Ragan Posted January 25, 2011 #3 Posted January 25, 2011 In March of '51, he would still be a Sergeant. They didn't re-name E-4 as Airman First Class till April 1952. Note the collar brass on his left lapel, it's the cut-out design of the winged prop. Sure looks like he's wearing the blue Ike instead of the OD version. Nice interesting photo. Thanks for showing this.
cco23i Posted January 25, 2011 #4 Posted January 25, 2011 I also think it's blue. The collar insignia may be the brushed silver and not the "gold" ones. Scott
DutchInfid3l Posted January 26, 2011 Author #5 Posted January 26, 2011 I don't agree... the Colonel, I think his Ike is blue... to my eye the Sgt (my bad on the A1C earlier) is wearing the OD, his lapel notch is more narrow, i.e more closed, than the Colonel, and looking at my other Blue and OD Ikes the OD are more narrow and the Blue have a more "V" shaped notch opening, granted that COULD be different manufacturer to manufacturer... Plus, the Col. he has the sizing buttons on the bottom of his jacket, like all my other Blue Ikes, they all have buttons. All of my OD Ikes have the strap with buckle. Another thing that leads me to believe the Sgt. is wearing OD, his has the little button hole strap thing peeking out of his lapel just above the Medal, yet another feature none of my Blue Ikes have those but all my OD ones do.
Steindaddie Posted January 26, 2011 #6 Posted January 26, 2011 It appears the sgt is wearing a khaki shirt & tie. If he were wearing a blue ike, shouldn't his tie be a dark blue like the colonel's? Or did they mix & match the army khaki shirts with their blues?
cco23i Posted January 26, 2011 #7 Posted January 26, 2011 Sometimes yes they did "mix and match" it depended on the base commander and what he authorized. I have to look, but I yhink my Ike has the small lapel strap like the O.D ones do. Scott
Lee Ragan Posted January 29, 2011 #8 Posted January 29, 2011 It appears the sgt is wearing a khaki shirt & tie. If he were wearing a blue ike, shouldn't his tie be a dark blue like the colonel's? Or did they mix & match the army khaki shirts with their blues? After seeing what you guys refer too, I believe you all are right that he is wearing OD instead of blue. That difference in the tie should have been the big tip off, plus the button hole tab under the lapel. Neat photo no matter what!
