48MMS Posted August 29, 2010 #1 Posted August 29, 2010 Wanted to share my first two issued patches, given to me by Major White, 48th Munitions Maintenance Squadron Commander, May, 1978. I still remember being taken to the Orderly room to meet the Commander and receive my welcome to the Squadron. Later that month while walking home from the Squadron in the rain, I heard a honk behind me and as I turned around saw it was the Wing Commander, Brig. General Robert E. Messerli, offering me a ride to the barracks. (It should be noted that General Messerli was the first man to amass 2000 hours in the F-104, and given the Starfighter notorious record for killing pilots, that is quite a feat!)
48MMS Posted August 29, 2010 Author #2 Posted August 29, 2010 Here is the serviving MMS patch I received back in 1978. I wore one and saved this one.
Teamski Posted August 29, 2010 #3 Posted August 29, 2010 Ahhh, thanks for showing us those. It's great that you saved them! I lived on base housing at Lakenheath for 4 of my 7 years in the UK back in the 1990's. You would not recognize the place now..... -Ski
48MMS Posted August 29, 2010 Author #4 Posted August 29, 2010 Ski, I last visited the "Heath" in 1992, and it was very different then! I could only imagine it now and have seen a few pictures. Here is my favorite TFS patch, one that I couldn't secure when I was there from 1978-80, but did get from a pilot in 1984 at McClellan AFB. I was there with the 522nd TFS as part of Gallant Eagle 84 as were pilots from RAF Lakenheath.
