cagedfalcon Posted January 17 Share #1 Posted January 17 I'm terrible at research. Gordon M. Dodge, enlisted in St Louis Missouri, sometime in 1917. Went through training and landed in Le Havre, France May 19, 1918. This date is on one of two purchased maps where he underlined town names he went through or fought in, as well as keeping notes on. He writes about his journey, by truck, bicycle and motorcycle. Both maps are great bits of history. One of them still has the original packet that it was sold. Other items in the grouping are, Tunic, with Sgt stripes, embroidered 35th patch, discharge chevron, 2 gold bullion war service chevrons, a Missouri Great War medal(with letter & box), Great War victory medal w/3 bars, St Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Defensive Sector( have box). The tunic has spotty minor moth nips, pointed out in the last photos. Overseas cap, British made. One pair of Putties, unused? Still have brass L&R tags on them. English to French dictionary X2. New Testament. Soldiers & Sailors diary, very sporadic entries. 3 dog tags. 17 loose photos/postcards. Wifes, Frida portrait, medium. Double paper frame of Gordon & Frida. Photo album with 82 photos, about 2/3 family. Negatives, 13 military, 36 civilian. Silk/embroidered birthday card with envelope. Returning Soldiers Handbook. Large portrait of Frida. And I believe lastly, their Marriage Certificate.

teufelhund Posted January 24 Share #9 Posted January 24 My pleasure.... The 35th ID is one of my favorite amongst many others div ; 2nd , 77th, 42nd etc..... These men have been butchered by having been sent to combat W/O no battle experience of the modern warfare, and above all , they were commanded by an incompetent leader , namely : Major General, Peter E Traub, The 35th suffered the highest rate of casualties of the AEF,in a only 4 days of real battle in the Argonne at a such point that a Congress inquiry was requesqted by Missourian a Kansasian senators, but called off due for some "unknown" reasons.... dont make the shinola hit the fane..was the only reply.
