66cobra Posted December 16, 2023 Share #1 Posted December 16, 2023 Can someone identify this knife? Looks like a m7 without the bayonet Attachments. Is it commercial or military? Thanks scott
SKIPH Posted December 16, 2023 Share #2 Posted December 16, 2023 66cobra- It's some strange plastic gripped copy of an M3 trench knife. It could have been made from an M3 whose leather handle rotted off. It could also be one of the M3s made in Vietnam out of M7 bayonets at one of the Special Forces "A" camps. What does the the top of the pommel look like? All a guess so far. SKIP
66cobra Posted December 16, 2023 Author Share #3 Posted December 16, 2023 There weren't any pictures showing the top. I contacted the auction site and they said there were no markings.
SKIPH Posted December 16, 2023 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2023 Theoretically, it would be easy to make one from an M3 with rotted leather handle. Get some old M4 plastic grips, line up the screw holes, drill, and put them on. SKIP
66cobra Posted December 16, 2023 Author Share #5 Posted December 16, 2023 That makes sense. Thanks Skip Scott
sactroop Posted December 16, 2023 Share #6 Posted December 16, 2023 I'm with Skip, my memory of the Vietnam conversion of bayonets to M3's has gotten pretty foggy. The details of the guard and the pommel/tang end might end up helping. Otherwise it might be hard to determine when and where it got this way. SKIPH Posted December 16, 2023 Share #7 Posted December 16, 2023 Frank Trzaska did an article that included that the RVN M3s. The article is in the "Military Knives" a Reference Book. SKIP
66cobra Posted December 16, 2023 Author Share #8 Posted December 16, 2023 I didn't know about RVN M3 knives until I just googed it after seeing the last post. Thanks for the info Scott
