Number Scratched into Backside of M1 Helmet

I have this M1 in my collection. Is there any explanation for this number being scratched into the paint? I noticed it when I was sorting through helmets the other day. I don't remember if I knew about it already, as its been some time since I did an inventory. I'm not sure why it's upside down either...

It is in the format of a laundry number.

 

There are 75 soldiers in the enlistment database with an ”M8400” laundry number.  Are there any markings anywhere else?  
 

If there is a liner in it, I would look it over closely - under-side of suspension, etc.

Seems like an odd spot for a laundry number. I'll look later to see if I can find a name or more info. Thank you.

You are always welcome.  Having myself worn a helmet for a few years, that placement actually makes a lot of sense.  Easy to spot your helmet amongst others, without having to pick it up.  
 

We just named our foliage bands, but these guys were pre-covers, for the most part.  Very cool helmet.
