1972firebird Posted April 6, 2023 Share #1 Posted April 6, 2023 Hey guys, just picked up this helmet cover a few weeks back and was able to pair it with a nice fixed bale i had laying around. I am hoping to find some info on the vet if i can make out the name on it. I am having some trouble trying to figure it out. Let me know what you think! Thanks. Nickman983 Posted April 6, 2023 Share #2 Posted April 6, 2023 It's very tough to say with the second name going through The one stencil looks like D. E. RED*AN Someone more familiar with USMC stencil styling may be able to say for certain but is it possible the middle letter is an M? Looking at ancestry there was a Donald E Redman who shows up in the 1798-1958 USMC Muster Records catalog. I don't have a subscription there but looking him up on fold3 there seems to be a match for a marine who looks to have served post WWII. The written name looks like PERS**GE I'm more stumped on that one. I was watching this one as well. Looks like a really nice cover, especially with the better pictures. I stayed out of the bidding as it was going for more than what I felt a likely post war used cover was worth but it displays very well and has some good research potential. CMT04 Posted April 16, 2023 Share #3 Posted April 16, 2023 Kind of an optical Illusion on the last letter, I see the N as stated above but when I look another way I see an S. I would go through the alphabet and try to guess the missing letter, there has to be something that would make sense and I’m guessing there isn’t many letters that come close to working. 1972firebird Posted August 16, 2023 Author Share #4 Posted August 16, 2023 I was able to get a file for Donald E Redman. He enlisted in the USMC postwar in 1947 as we suspected. He has an interesting file as it seems he tried to re enlist for korea but was denied because of a hearing disability. Then later on he claimed that he got his hearing disability from his service in the corps.
