I am sharing this group, which recently came to my attention. The named and authenticated group is a rare example of a medal to a Revenue Cutter officer. But my ulterior motive in sharing it is to generate a discussion about the USRS (US Revenue Ship?) on the ship bar. Windom was a Phase I issue, and the only other Revenue Cutter Medal I have seen is a Phase II medal with the designation USRC (US Revenue Cutter). I am wondering if someone pointed out the error and it was corrected for Phase II awards.

I think “USRS” is an error. Cutter has been the proper terminology since the founding of the RCS in 1790. USRC Windom later became USRC Comanche.   Is Sampson the name of the individual whose grouping this was?

No, I was just using Sampson as short hand for Sampson Medal. I also think the USRS was the error and this was corrected in Phase II, but awarded USRCS Sampson Medals are rare as hen's teeth and Hudson was the only other cutter to get a medal in Phase I. Barry Weaver documented 7 Hudson medals in collections so hopefully someone out there has one and can comment. I am also hoping to see a photo of one of the other cutters from Phase II that is officially named.
