B-17Guy Posted August 7, 2019 #1 Posted August 7, 2019 I have a Taylor Eagle Squadron painting the has two signatures, but one I can't seem to ID. I've looked over rosters of 71, 121 and 133 Sqdrn's, but can't make sense of this one. Any Eagle Squadron experts out there have any ideas? John
JBFloyd Posted August 7, 2019 #2 Posted August 7, 2019 Looks like "Johnnie Johnson", later Air Vice Marshal James Edgar Johnson. His signature varied over the years, but the "s" in Johnson is distinctive.
B-17Guy Posted August 7, 2019 Author #3 Posted August 7, 2019 I think you are totally correct! I looked at his signature on line after your posting and I agree, slight variation, but also many consistencies. This also explains why I couldn’t find a match on Eagle Squadron rosters. It’s tough when you are looking for a name using a tough to Id signature, very glad you recognized it. By the way, the other signature on the painting is James Goodson. Thanks again JB! John
JBFloyd Posted August 7, 2019 #4 Posted August 7, 2019 Both Goodson and Johnson were prolific signers. Goodson was in the aviation art print business for a number of years in the UK. Since he knew the Eagles and most of the other aviation personalities, he was able to get some high-speed autographs regularly.
