A friend gave me these (and he has many more). He thinks - but not sure - that these may have been used to identify military cargo, possibly WW2 era. Was considering that these may have been affixed to cargo/crates.

 

Recognizing that metals were primarily used for the war effort, these feel like brass - have a little heft to them.

 

Each has a stamping of numbers and letters on one side, and roman numerals on the other.

 

Is anybody here familiar with these? Are they merely tokens towards something else (subway)?

They do look well made.

 

Just a guess, but they look similar to the old tags placed on telephone poles.
