M17 reissue helmet 92nd Division

Hello ,I just got this one today from an older collection. I believe its a 92nd ID helmet, these were most likely issued in 1942 and then quickly replaced with M1's - that would explain its unused almost condition.

 

Helmet is signed with random stamps, I can make one out: M4512 ?? or another18-M108 ? also pencil writing CAPt. CERCEP (or CERCEO)

 

is there any pictures from 1942 showing helmet with 92nd insignia like this ?

I think this is a great looking helmet, but I think that it is more likely the insignia for the 17th Infantry Regiment or even the 9th Cavalry Regiment than a 92nd Infantry Division piece.

Unlikely it for the 92nd Inf Div seeing they were reactivated in late 1942, October 1942. Maybe like Allan mentioned with the other possibility, that for the 9th Cav, if so, perhaps different Troops within the regiment used different colored buffoons???

Was going to say maybe it's a accidental paint blotch, nah, looks to purposeful for that, plus that's it centered on the front.

buffoons is it Should of course read Buffalos.

Thanks for all the info Guys, I have seen pictures of colored soldiers of 92nd and 93rd division wearing Kelly helmets Stateside in 1942... thought maybe thats one of these helmets... But maybe You Guys are right and its a regimental symbol - 10th Cav or any other Buffalo soldiers unit.. ?

That's 10th Cav rather then the 9th.

These soldiers with the Kelly helmets in this photo need not necessarily be from those divisions, they could be from those units that were separate that went on to form these divisions, namely the 24th and 25th Infantry's.

The 17th Infantry didn't adopt the Buffalo as it's mascot until 1950, so definitely not the 17th Infantry. Great lid though!

The above photo I posted and the one in this post is from the 93rd Div website and its described as May of 1942. I was thinking that these divisions were the last ones to receive all new gear because of being colored and there could be a good chance they still got M17 helmets even in October of 1942..... just a theory

As the 93rd Division was reactivated in May 1942, yes indeed they would of been wearing the Tin Hat on when it was reactivated. But unknown it this division might of used the buffalo imagery, this despite their being called Buffalo soldiers in the 19th Century.

 

Perhaps a check of the various serial number might yield something at least in the race of one of the numbers.

Being a "White Buffalo" could also just be a native american thing. Love the helmet.
