Titanium Posted September 20, 2018 Share #1 Posted September 20, 2018 Very interested in the concept of leggings/puttees as a flexible, lightweight ankle/lower leg protective covering used in conjunction with cross country shoes (vs using full, heavy, stiff high top boots) and I'm willing to give it a shot at making them myself. I'm also open to hearing from those who make and sell them. Thanks!
stealthytyler Posted September 20, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 20, 2018 I wouldn't bet on a manufacturer to give up their patterns to anyone. It is not in the best interest of their business. My suggestion would be to disassemble a pair of leggings and use that to draw your patterns. Make notes on stitch lines and etc
sgtpeter Posted September 20, 2018 Share #3 Posted September 20, 2018 If you are not particularly set on military leggings, try googling free gaiter patterns. You can use your favorite fabric and tweak for your needs. Years ago you could buy a kit with all the pieces you need (that's what I did). Most of the gaiters I see now use velcro closure, but I like the zippers on mine.
thorin6 Posted September 20, 2018 Share #4 Posted September 20, 2018 Orienteering folks have been using leggings/gaiters for years, usually reinforce at the front. Probably cheaper to buy than build, but maybe not as much fun.
Titanium Posted September 21, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted September 21, 2018 Good stuff, thanks. One particular material I'd like to try is Duck Cloth, Nylon, per MILC7219, NSN 8305-01-173-4436, as this seems to be the miracle cloth that my SV-2B vest is made of lol. It can get soaking wet and literally two minutes later is dry again. It is a heavy-duty, UNcoated nylon. Anyone know where to find it?
Franklin45 Posted September 24, 2018 Share #6 Posted September 24, 2018 Just wanted to add that there were GI Ski Gaiters designed for use with the issue ski boots for cross country, downhill, and snowshoes. They are shorter than the M1938 Dismounted Leggins and more elongated in shape to better fit bulky Ski/Mountaineering Boots. Examples are available here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Mountain-Troup-Ski-OD-Leggings-size-Medium-E9800/311934901319?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649
