Bellumbill Posted July 26, 2018 #1 Posted July 26, 2018 Hello all - I just picked up 2 WWII dated us army canteens - one Vollrath 1943 and the other TACU Co. dated 1942. Interesting to note that the TACU canteen is about a half inch taller than the Vollrath. Is this possible? I never have noticed such a thing before. Best, Bill K.
268th C.A. Posted July 26, 2018 #2 Posted July 26, 2018 Bill post a picture. That's a new one on me too....????
Bellumbill Posted July 27, 2018 Author #3 Posted July 27, 2018 Here they are - Vollrath on left, TACU Co. on right. Any ideas? Thank you! Bill K.
milsurp_scout_14 Posted July 27, 2018 #4 Posted July 27, 2018 I forget why they made that variation, but some were produced with a sort of 'shelf' where the cap screws on, plus the Vollrath is a flat lid, as opposed to the later style lid on the TACU Co.
Bellumbill Posted July 27, 2018 Author #5 Posted July 27, 2018 Yes, I noted the "shelf" but you can still see that the canteens are differently shaped and clearly the TACU is overall taller. I am going to start going through all my canteens now and see if I can find others with this anomaly. Best, Bill K.
themick Posted July 28, 2018 #6 Posted July 28, 2018 The real way to tell is if you post a picture of the two canteens with the caps removed. The only thing clear in the posted picture is that one cap is taller than the other. Steve
denfly Posted August 7, 2018 #7 Posted August 7, 2018 Also remember, the TACU canteen is aluminum and the Vollrath is stainless Steel.
doyler Posted August 7, 2018 #8 Posted August 7, 2018 Had several of the TACU 42 and they typically have the early flat cap. Im sure with surplus sales and caps getting broken any comination will be found.
