Eric Queen Posted May 16, 2018 Share #1 Posted May 16, 2018 Looks early to me. I was guessing 20's or so. Did not know the Marines had balloons at that time. Anyone have a better feel for time period? Thanks.

Patchcollector Posted May 16, 2018 Share #3 Posted May 16, 2018 I zoomed in and cleaned up the image a bit to try and bring out more detail.
ocsfollowme Posted May 16, 2018 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2018 fixed tones.
ocsfollowme Posted May 16, 2018 Share #5 Posted May 16, 2018 I really cannot make out if there are any fins on the reverse of it. Either this is more of an observation balloon/blimp or it was still under construction....

manayunkman Posted May 16, 2018 Share #7 Posted May 16, 2018 I would say 1920s observation balloon with a Mack truck out front.
manayunkman Posted May 16, 2018 Share #8 Posted May 16, 2018 Or is it a Latil winch truck? If the fin is under the balloon it could be French? The truck looks like it has a winch on the back.
Eric Queen Posted May 16, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted May 16, 2018 Thanks to all for the image enhancements and the comments. Steve, thanks also for the article. I did not know Marines used balloons that early.
suwanneetrader Posted May 16, 2018 Share #10 Posted May 16, 2018 A few years ago I bought a China Marines grouping from the family. Documents and photos were not only of him in China guarding buildings, etc. but also when he was assigned with other Marines to Lakehurst N.J..working with balloons including a famous one, Richard
rustywings Posted May 16, 2018 Share #11 Posted May 16, 2018 Due to its relatively small size and lack of upper fin, I wonder if it might be a fixed cable barrage balloon, rather than a airship or tethered observation balloon? Seems like it's positioned in an ideal spot to quickly throw up an obstacle to protect their camp from aerial assault?
rustywings Posted May 16, 2018 Share #12 Posted May 16, 2018 Similar to these barrage balloons...
