capt14k Posted October 25, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2017 Are there different variations of the Cattaraugus 225Q or is one of these modified? The sheaths look to be the same. One is slightly longer than the other. The one the pommel stake is indented and the other is raised. The biggest difference is the one has a straight back edge and the other curves into the tip. sactroop Posted October 26, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2017 I'm used to these knives having the same blade pattern as the one pictured at the top. The first one I remember seeing with the swaged clip point was when you posted the knife about 10 days ago.
sundance Posted October 26, 2017 Share #3 Posted October 26, 2017 I don't recall seeing a blade like the one on the bottom. Could someone have modified the blade on their own or do you believe it was factory made.

It is the same one I had posted previously. The one with the normal blade I just picked up. Another difference is the top one has a red spacer and the bottom one has a clear spacer. DRE66 Posted October 26, 2017 Share #5 Posted October 26, 2017 If you do a Google search you will see a few with clip points like yours but were done by the owners. There certainly is enough meat on that blade for such mods.
sundance Posted October 26, 2017 Share #6 Posted October 26, 2017 I'm guessing the differences in the grips are a result of the removal of the blade to reconfigure it. Nice knives though in any event.
sundance Posted October 26, 2017 Share #7 Posted October 26, 2017 As an aside, it's interesting that the leather on the grips of these Q knives are always or almost always roughed up to some degree. I've heard that was factory done. Have others heard that?
sactroop Posted October 26, 2017 Share #8 Posted October 26, 2017 Some of us have seen NOS knives still in the original box they where delivered in to Uncle Sam. The handles are roughed up on those. IMHO, I'd say that it's unlikely that the knife was disassembled, it almost impossible to do without destroying some of the parts. I've seen and have a few examples with different spacers used that I believe left the factory that way.
DRE66 Posted October 26, 2017 Share #9 Posted October 26, 2017 Curious, how were they packed, any pics?
sactroop Posted October 26, 2017 Share #10 Posted October 26, 2017 Individually in a cardboard box with the sheath. There maybe an old thread here with a picture of one. I think the individual boxes where packed in bigger boxes of set quantities. I don't remember if I've every seen anything about the larger packaging with the Q knives. DRE66 Posted October 26, 2017 Share #11 Posted October 26, 2017 Thats interesting. If you find a pic I would enjoy seeing it. Thanks.
sactroop Posted October 26, 2017 Share #12 Posted October 26, 2017 Did a search for 225Q here and came back with 3 pages going back to 2007. Unfortunately a lot of these old threads still suffer from the "third party hosting" of images posted. Add to it that a lot of the links are now broken, well no joy so far. DRE66 Posted October 26, 2017 Share #13 Posted October 26, 2017 Thanks. Photobucket decided not to host pics for free and that killed it for a lot of us.
capt14k Posted October 30, 2017 Author Share #14 Posted October 30, 2017 That is very interesting about the grips. I did notice almost all of them I looked at had rough grips. The clip point makes sense that it was a field modification. Entire knives were made in the field. Modifying one would be a lot easier. Thank you all for the info.
