Grant S. Posted September 7, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2017 We recently received two nice blouses with the below patch on them. As far as I can tell, this is a Pipefitter rating. As a rating unto its own it only existed from 1948 to 1958. I suspect, though, that the job existed well before that but I cannot find any evidence that it was assumed under some other insignia, like ship fitter. Does anyone know if it was and if, by some chance, they would have worn this insignia? I rather doubt it but I've been wrong plenty of times before. MastersMate Posted September 7, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 7, 2017 Check up on the Painter and Plumber ratings. They wore the specialty mark of the Carpenter's Mate
Salvage Sailor Posted September 7, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 7, 2017 I'm failry certain that this is the Pipefitter rating itself which existed from 1948 to 1958 FP Pipefitter (1948-1958) (to SF) FPB Pipefitter Coppersmith FPG Pipefitter Shipboard FPP Pipefitter Plumber FPS Pipefitter Steamfitter The Hull Maintenance Technician (HT) rating's lineage stems from the Shipfitter rating that was established in 1921; branched off to the Metalsmith and Pipefitter ratings in 1948, then re-established to Shipfitter from the Metalsmith and Pipefitter ratings in 1958, later to become the rating of today. Other ratings related to Pipefitter stemed from the SF Shipfitter ratings (which would not have had the crossed pipe wrenches) SF Shipfitter (1901-1948) (to ME, FP) (1958-?) SFCBP Shipfitter Construction Battalion Pipefitter and Plumber SFSRP Shipfitter Ship Repair Pipefitter and Plumber SFP Shipfitter Pipefitter ( -1948) (to FP)
Justin B. Posted September 11, 2017 Share #4 Posted September 11, 2017 Pipefitter was formed in 1948 by parts of the shipfitter and metalsmith ratings (crossed hammers).
KRIS FORD Posted March 14, 2018 Share #5 Posted March 14, 2018 Our forefathers!! When I worked in the Pipe Shop, the crossed pipe wrenches was our un-official symbol..I made a stencil of it to spray on backs of coveralls. I wanna say it was sprayed on the hatch to our shop as well..
