I know this is a terrible picture but the original was terrible. The year is 1937 about. My father is a West point cadet training in this plane wanting to be a pilot. However, every time he flew he would barf in the plane and had to clean up the mess as he is doing in another picture. So ended his flying career . However, he was tagged with the name "buckets" ever after by his classmates. I am curious what this plane is. THANKS

I believe this is an O-46A aircraft but won't put money on it.

The O-46 first flew in 1935, so you guessed the identity of the aircraft correctly. Also, the O-46 differed from the older O-43 in having a radial engine (the radial cowling for the O-46's engine can be discerned in the photo in post#1).
