mshaw Posted November 22, 2016 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2016 A friend asked me to help identify this and I don't have a clue. Edged weapons aren't my specialty but I do have bayonets and knives in my collection but I have never seen this one before. Markings: Patented Sept. 29th, 1861 US 92 Any help is greatly appreciated! 1st photo:

ludwigh1980 Posted November 22, 2016 Share #4 Posted November 22, 2016 I believe that is a needle for sewing heavy canvas such as sails, bags, bails etc. More industrial in application.
Backtheattack Posted November 22, 2016 Share #5 Posted November 22, 2016 Remembers me for a sailors tool as ludwigh1980 said, especially with the hole in it for a small rope.

Misfit 45 Posted November 23, 2016 Share #8 Posted November 23, 2016 I don't know anything about this, but I do have a question. If this is a sewing "needle", what type of canvas from a sail would require a needle that looks to be about an inch in diameter. Wouldn't that be way too large even for large sails? What are the dimensions? It's really a very cool piece whatever it is. Marv
