Just picked up a 1943 Jerry can today that has a reddish/rust colored paint job over the OD. The paint isn't new and I was wondering if this could/would have been done in the field for any reason. Thanks!

Also has yellow lettering (stenciled) that says "Gasoline and oil for handybilly(?)".

Thanks 268th C.A. Looks like it's safe to strip or repaint it back to OD.

correct..

sometimes the primer underneath the OD is red but not the can itself and it would have had no painted lettering (normally).
