What is the story behind felt squadron patches?

Were these mail-ins for children from magazines or cereal boxes?

 

Here is a VJ-1 Navy squadron patch. I probably paid more than I should for this one, but I have never seen this squadron patch and offered a neat opportunity for my display for real/reproduction or even home front patches. Measures 8.5" wide. It feels like the same material pennants are made from.

Not too bad a copy of the emblem , but the original art had a bit more better details to the pilot/photog in his beak , and some of the color details are a little different , tha Mail bag has stripes on it .
