sgtpete Posted June 11, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 11, 2014 I found some footage of whats listed as Noumea December 1942. At the end are ships sortieing from the base, including two carriers. The carrier on the left crosses the bow of the carrier on the right, so they switch positions in the second photo. I don't think they look like the Enterprise or the Saratoga, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
Johnny Signor Posted June 11, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 11, 2014 The one in the first photo top, could be a CVE type (Escort carrier) as the Island looks forward on it , hey usually had then further forward on the CVE's , the other also could be a CVE ,hard to tell being the images are slightly blurry . sgtpete Posted June 11, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted June 11, 2014 The islands do look like a Bouge class CVE, I just thought they looked too large to be a CVE. Here is the film. https://archive.org/details/NPC-
sgtpete Posted June 11, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted June 11, 2014 I just found the description of the film and it says "converted carriers leave Noumea" for the last scene, so they are some type of CVE's. If anyone is interested, at 0:40 there is a CL(AA) leaving Noumea. Its is either the San Diego or San Juan (both were in Noumea in 12/42 and the Atlanta and Juneau were already sunk)
sgtpete Posted June 11, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted June 11, 2014 Thanks for the hints, after some research it looks like it a shot of the USS Nassau and USS Altamaha leaving Noumea.
