USMC Great Coat and Cape, Sgt Ralph Kibbe, Phillipine Insurrection

Recommended Posts

Here is a nice example of the kersey blue great coat and red lined cape used by the Marines in the latter half of the 19th century. Purchased from the estate of Sgt. Ralph Kibbe, USMC.

Wonderful uniform set-up...and all to the same Marine

You don't see too many of these early capes and coats...I think I've seen more helmets than the capes

Baseball legend Ted Williams put it well when asked which was the best team he ever played on. Without hesitation he said, “The United States Marine Corps.”

Always looking for any early Utah National Guard especially Spanish-American War Utah Light Artillery, and Utah City/ County World War One medals.

historyandcultures,

For the greatcoat...yes. Typically rank stripes were up in the traditional area higher up the sleeve. However, when wearing the greatcoat AND cape, the stripes were obscured. Therefore, they had to put them down lower so they were visible. Even into WW1, rank on greatcoats was denoted on the green wool officer overcoats with different patterns of braid. See Alec Tulkoff's excellent reference: Equipping the Corps.
