Bayonet Hoe for your Victory Garden!

Hello Folks,

I posted these pictures a few years ago on the edged weapon forum and re-discovered them while going through some old files. I thought the Home Front forum would like to see this unusual item designed specifically for the folks left at home who had their patriotic victory garden to help the war effort.

In 1943, the military ordered the shortening of the long M1 Garand bayonet from 16 inches to ten inches. Union Fork and Hoe Company used the left over pieces to make this Bayonet Hoe. An unusual piece of Home Front history.

This is the only one I have actually seen. Frank Trzaska showed pictures of his a few years back. I think he wrote that these were mostly used as display items in hardware stores. It's a very well made hoe. The handle is 3/4 inch hardwood and has a good heft to it, so it surely could have been used for its intended purpose.

Our enemies should fear us, if this is what we use on our gardens! Too funny! But then again, why waste good steal, especially in the middle of a war?
