Fred Borgmann Posted April 9, 2013 Author Share #2 Posted April 9, 2013 I think both are the same plane.
CorsairAce Posted April 9, 2013 Share #3 Posted April 9, 2013 It kind of looks like a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny, but I don't think the tail is right.
J_Andrews Posted April 9, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 9, 2013 Maybe a Douglas O-2.

Johnny Signor Posted April 9, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 9, 2013 If you can zoom in on the tail of the first photo , it says "Douglas O-2 or 4 I believe Johnny Try this site 1000 aircraft photos, click the letter "D" and see what comes up , it's a great site for checking out types. Third Herd Posted April 9, 2013 Share #7 Posted April 9, 2013 How about a Douglas C-1, they had side by side seating instead of the tandem seating on the Douglas O-2.
Johnny Signor Posted April 9, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 9, 2013 Yeah after checking it's a Douglas C-1 Johnny
J_Andrews Posted April 9, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 9, 2013 I looked at the the C-1, but a C-1 (in my data) has three oval windows on the side, behind the cockpit.
Johnny Signor Posted April 10, 2013 Share #10 Posted April 10, 2013 There were probably a few "variants" of the type, most of the older birds had them ....................
rr01 Posted April 10, 2013 Share #11 Posted April 10, 2013 I looked at the the C-1, but a C-1 (in my data) has three oval windows on the side, behind the cockpit. You're right about the windows but I will suspect that some may have been modified and the windows eliminated. I took a little time to see what info is available including a couple books published in that era but had to finally come back to the Internet. I hope some of this data and images add a little more info. http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=3232 http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=3233 http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=3236 There are a lot of images provided but I think what remains the constant is the fuselage, empennage, and the bracing & rigging. Interesting topic.
Johnny Signor Posted April 10, 2013 Share #12 Posted April 10, 2013 We know for sure it's a "Douglas" make as you can just make out the words "Douglas" on the rudder and below what appears to be either 0-# or C-# for the "type" . Johnny
quack Posted April 10, 2013 Share #13 Posted April 10, 2013 I agree it is one of the versions of the Douglas C-1. Not all had the windows. One of them was a tanker/transport version, without windows in the fuselage. The Douglas "O" series had the cockpits more to the rear-- the C-1 was identifiable by having a side-by-side cockpit forward of the wings.
