Tom Kibler Posted August 23, 2012 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2012 This is new to me. I recently picked up several USNR tags from 1943-1944. One of them has a thumb print? Any help would be appreciated. I think the others are pretty "normal". Thanks.

Tom Kibler Posted August 23, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted August 23, 2012 Can anyone tell me about the "Odd" finger print version? Looks almost cast. Thanks. TK
Rakkasan187 Posted August 23, 2012 Share #6 Posted August 23, 2012 The dog is "acid etched" with the Sailor's print. This was used as another verification tool for identification. Some WW2 Navy Discharge papers that I have; have the standard ink finger or thumb print on the paperwork. This normally matched the thumb/finger print acid etched onto the dog tag. Not to sure what digit they used, thumb or finger... http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq70-2.htm Leigh
Tom Kibler Posted August 23, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted August 23, 2012 Thanks. Are these worth anything more? Naval stuff isn't up my alley. Thanks! TK
Rakkasan187 Posted August 23, 2012 Share #8 Posted August 23, 2012 All depends on research about the Sailor. If you can find out what ship he was on, or where he was, ie Pearl Harbor, Midway, on a submarine, PT boat, something like that, they may be worth something. I would suspect Navy enthusiasts would be better prepared to tell you a price.. Leigh

Rakkasan187 Posted August 23, 2012 Share #10 Posted August 23, 2012 According to my very quick search, your Sailor Monroe Franklin Hartman was on the Aircraft carrier Hornet CV-12. I have several muster rolls that show him on the ship as early as 1943. Leigh
Tom Kibler Posted August 23, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted August 23, 2012 WOW! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! John E Brenneman is the name on the "Finger Print" tag. A friend called me and explained how these were made (Thanks Jim). It is very difficult to read what is on his tag.
