48MMS Posted August 2, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2011 I arrived at RAF Lakenheath on 7 May 1978, a member of the 48th Munitions Maintenance Squadron. This is the actual 48th TFW patch my Commander presented me with. Although not as glamous or fearsome a Wing as some others (although I doubt you could convince any Libyans of that), the 48th TFW remains the only unit in the United States Air Force that can be addressed by it's name, "The Statue of Liberty Wing". All others have to be addressed by their numerical name.

gparlin Posted August 2, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 2, 2011 I have always liked this design; it’s just a great looking patch with lots of history. I loved it when you guy’s lit up Qaddafi in ’86. Gregg

Patchcollector Posted August 2, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 2, 2011 I have a little Lakenheath story. While TDY there in the late 80's,I was in a vehicle on base when a few F-111'S passed in front of us(yes the runway crossed the road!) As we waited for them to pass, and watched them go by,the driver pointed to the planes and said"See that dragon painted on the planes, that signifies that those planes participated in the Libyan bombings"
