renfield Posted April 13, 2012 Author Share #126 Posted April 13, 2012 Yes I did get a copy of "The Pride of Seattle-The History of the First 300 B17Fs" and that is what got me interested in B-17s in the opening months of the war. I just got this press photo of an English marked B-17. It is in the British Middle East Command. I do not know what model it is. As always thanks for all the input from the forum members. 38Driver Posted April 14, 2012 Share #127 Posted April 14, 2012 Fortress I (B-17C) AN532 of 90 Squadron RAF. It had 9 operational sorties. 4 Forts were detached from 90 Squadron to the Middle East for a short time, but had little success. That picture shows up in MJF Bowyer's book "2 Group RAF" that contains a chapter on the RAF Fortresses. Nice pick up though

renfield Posted May 29, 2012 Author Share #131 Posted May 29, 2012 Here is a great picture I just got. DRAGON LADY flew with the385th BG 551st BS. The plane was damaged in a raid near Calais, and forced to ditch in the English Channel. The pilot Lt. Edwin Herron is credited with saving 6 of his crewmen. An action for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Captian Herron was killed in action on 6 Oct. 1944. He is buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery. The nose art was painted by Anne Haywood who worked with the American Red Cross Aero Club.
renfield Posted May 29, 2012 Author Share #132 Posted May 29, 2012 I am hoping someone here can help me out a bit on this one. The name just visable is BETTY BOOP. I think this plane is also the PISTOL PACK'N MAMA of the 390th BG 570th BS. I have seen pictures of the pilots side of the AC and the nose art is not the same. Any help on the ID? Thanks Steve

Bowman crew but it's too large a resolution photo to post here Jack

renfield Posted June 16, 2012 Author Share #136 Posted June 16, 2012 Yet another Ebay grab. LATEST RUMOR a B-17F-75-DL 42-3547 was in the 549th BS 385thBG, Great Ashfield. The patch seen below the window was to cover a flack hit that killed the navigator, Phill Vockerath. She was salvaged on April 1944 and renamed BLUE CHAMPAGNE (the second). The nose art was changed and the shark teeth painted over. Steve

renfield Posted October 11, 2012 Author Share #142 Posted October 11, 2012 That is a great picture of an E model. Well I think all pictures of B-17s are great. Thanks for everyone for adding their pictures and history to this thread. It is nice that we can all help each other research our photos and named ships. renfield Posted October 20, 2012 Author Share #143 Posted October 20, 2012 I just got this picture the other day. I was wondering if anyone had seen this picture or if I scored an unpublished picture of a damaged B-17. Either way I think it is a nice pic.......but it would be nice ot have an original picture. renfield Posted December 7, 2012 Author Share #145 Posted December 7, 2012 This is my second snapshot of YANKEE DIDD'LER of the 65th BS/43BG. It looks as if all of the plexiglass has been removed and she is being salvaged for parts. That would mean this picture was taken at Dobodura in the South Pacific. renfield Posted January 20, 2013 Author Share #146 Posted January 20, 2013 I think the K.O. is from the 301st BG. I am not sure of that. The SHACK BUNNY is from the 385th BG 8th AAF. I got into a bidding war for the SHACK BUNNY picture before I did my home work. It is an older copy of a known picture. Lesson learned! renfield Posted February 8, 2013 Author Share #147 Posted February 8, 2013 I have got some new pictures to share. This damaged B-17 is from the 100th BG.
renfield Posted February 8, 2013 Author Share #148 Posted February 8, 2013 It looks like the life raft compartment has been blown open, damage to the tail and a bad gash to the body of the plane behind the waist gunner position. It looks like the damage that was inflicted to the ALL AMERICAN but she was not in the 100th. I wish I knew the story of this B-17. Steve
renfield Posted February 8, 2013 Author Share #149 Posted February 8, 2013 I do not know what BG this plane is with. The other pictures are of 100th BG planes. The name is EXCALIBURS REVENGE, I can not make out the art work. I hope someone can help me with info on this ship. Steve
renfield Posted February 8, 2013 Author Share #150 Posted February 8, 2013 The square D of the 100th BG can be seen on the wing of the B-17in this picture. What is interesting to me is the background. Where in the world was this picture taken? I think this must have been during a shuttle mission. Not your average B-17 in England picture.
