frederick Posted June 27, 2008 #1 Posted June 27, 2008 This is another of the groups I wrote to in the early 1970s. They responded with information on the formation of the organization. Their packet contained some Annual Dinner Programs and pages from their newsletter. Illustration one has one of their short histories. The badge in illustration two is the only type I have seen. From its construction, I guess the badge to be 1920s-1930s manufacture. When first organized, they had officer titles such as President, Vice-President, etc., but changed later to National Commander, Vice-Commander, and so forth, to align with existing veteran societies. The basic membership badge is the only badge I have. Do not believe they had officer badges, but an individual veteran may have borrowed a title bar from another society and attached it to his badge. On the national officer level, it is possible that jeweler made presentation badges exist, but I have never seen one in a display or dealer's case. This was a great organization of men who did a lot and saw a lot, but now even their memories are gone.
Croix de Guerre Posted June 29, 2008 #4 Posted June 29, 2008 That's really interesting! I collect American Field Service so my interests cross into the USAAC frequently. I've seen that medal before on ebay but only once. I would be interested in copies of some of the histories if you would be willing. If you haven't seen them, I have posted photos of some of my AFS uniforms in the groupings forum.
BEAST Posted December 6, 2008 #5 Posted December 6, 2008 In 1919, while still overseas, the SSU association was formed. This was open to those who served with the USAAS, the by-laws and constitution were published in the February 27, 1919 edition of "The Radiator". In this edition was also the application for membership which is shown below.
