Look at the pants the guy on the right is wearing. Looks like HBT with an added pocket beneath the cargo pocket (british BD pants pocket?)

Not a HBT but a regular 1937 Wool pant with cargo pockets applied, due to the shortage of regulation items

See Michel Detrez book ' First aiborne Task Force"

What a strange canteen cover has a para in the middle. Why it is so high and not proportional?

Thanks for your post teufelhund but i dont really agree although I know about the wool pants with M42 pockets sewn on.

In fact this was done in the Maritime Alps after one month on the line always forward. The battered and torn pants were then replaced

by wool pants and the troopers kept their pants' pockets and had them sewn on locally.

I am adding two pics of these pockets in the Maritime Alps (note spray camo still on pockets).

Now for the trooper at La Motte church

btw see my post here http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...showtopic=16825

im almost 99% sure he's wearing HBT pants (note cargo pocket covered by the jacket) and it has that HBT shape too. (I have another pic with a trooper wearing HBTs in SF)

but what is that second pocket ??

Lt Chopper Kienlen on the right see article here

Bud Curtis HQ 1st Bn 517th 08/14/44 Italy

Note he is wearing HBT pants, buckle boots (he left his jumpboots in italy because he only had one pair and wanted to keep them in good shape) and an M43 camo'd jacket. Also note the 2 m3's and the M1 bayonet!!

RE: The first pic.

The man in the middle has 2 Carbine Pouches, one above the other. The man to the left appears to have 2 canteens.

Same place... other period

Yes you are right about the pant, probably an HBT with applied cargo pockets

The best theory I have heard so far is that the "second pocket" is simply another HBT pants' pocket taken from an old pair of HBT's.

I dont think the added pocket is another HBT pocket taken from a another set of HBT,s because there are no button holes in the top flap. could be a pocket made from scrap material
